Summary

Given the finite resources of the brain, the digital infinity of relational cognition requires a grammar with a combinatorial procedure, namely a proof-theoretic grammar. Formalisation of this grammar specifies all possible mods and reveals their interrelations. This is a necessary step in reducing RMT to a neuroscientific theory. One must know specifically what cognitive states are in question before addressing the issue of identifying them with states of the brain.

1 So as to avoid possible confusion, note that Langendoen and Postal describe proof-theoretic grammars for natural languages as a step toward dismissing them. This matter will be discussed later.
